National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day is observed annually on August 4. This is a day to enjoy those tasty bits of chocolate in your favorite cookies.

For the same reason we thank Ruth Graves Wakefield for chocolate chips, we also celebrate her name on National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day.  If it weren’t for her curiosity and invention, we wouldn’t hover around ovens savoring the moment the timer dings.  If she had never wondered what chunks of chocolate would taste like mixed into a sugar cookie dough, we would know the ecstasy that is a warm chocolate chip cookie melting on our tongue, our eyes closing in heavenly satisfaction and perfect smiles crowning our faces.  No, if it weren’t for Ruth Graves Wakefield, entire generations would have been denied the bliss that is a chocolate chip cookie.

One of the MANY things we get to brag on at Iron City Lofts is the views from the property. Several Birmingham landmarks such as Sloss Furnaces, the Vulcan, Pepper Place, Lakeview District and Regions Field are surrounding the property and minutes away. Many of these are walkable from Iron City Lofts.

Sloss Furnaces - Sloss Furnaces produced iron for nearly 90 years, which gave rise to the city of Birmingham, AL. Now recognized as a National Historic Landmark, Sloss Furnaces, with its web of pipes and tall smokestacks, offers a glimpse into the great industrial past of the South and our nation.

The Vulcan - What kind of city builds a huge statue of a burly, bearded, bare-bottomed man to tower over its entire population? One that never forgets its roots. Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and forge, watches over all of Birmingham as a symbol of the city’s iron origins–and the ever-present spark of its indomitable spirit. Birmingham Alabama’s colossal statue is the world’s largest cast iron statue and considered one of the most memorable works of civic art in the United States. Designed by Italian artist Giuseppe Moretti and cast from local iron in 1904, Vulcan has overlooked Alabama’s largest city from atop Red Mountain since the 1930s.

The Market at Pepper Place - The Market at Pepper Place was established in 2000 in response to a growing need to help small family farms, and provide a connection between these family farmers and the people of Birmingham, Alabama. From our beginning with a few tents in the center parking lot of Pepper Place, we have now grown to over 100 tents spread across parking lots and streets around Pepper Place. Our attendance also has grown at times to over 10,000 people per Saturday at the height of the season. Originally running from mid May until early October, our market now begins in mid April and ends in mid December.

Regions Field - In April of 2013, the Birmingham Barons Baseball Club played their first game in their new ballpark, Regions Field. The state-of-the-art 8,500 seat facility in the heart of downtown replaced Hoover Metropolitan Stadium, the home of the Barons since 1988. The crown jewel of Birmingham's newly developed Parkside District, features a variety of unique seating areas, creating an intimate atmosphere and offering unique views of the downtown skyline, UAB, Children's Hospital, Vulcan and Red Mountain.
